The Architecture of Intelligent Cities: Integrating human, collective and artificial intelligence to enhance knowledge and innovation

Nicos Komninos is Professor of Urban Development and Innovation Policy at the Aristotle University of Thessalonica and he has taught in universities of France, Italy, and the U.K. He holds master degree of architect-engineer from the Aristotle University and a PhD from the ‘Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales’, Paris. His research interests have focussed on intelligent cities and regions, which represent a fourth generation innovation environment (after the R&D lab, technology districts, and learning regions) combining innovative clusters, learning institutions, and digital innovation spaces.

He is director of Urban and Regional Innovation (URENIO) Research Unit and he has co-ordinated about 70 projects under the European R&D Framework Programmes and the ERDF Innovative Actions. He has been involved in several Greek Regional Innovation Strategies and Regional Innovative Actions; took part in the Regional Innovation Strategy for Cyprus (2001-2004); and participates currently in RIS South Bulgaria and East Lithuania (2005-2008). He was co-ordinator of the INNOREGIO project (1999–2002) which developed and diffused methods and tools for knowledge and innovation management; coordinator of the European Network VERITE (Virtual Environment for Regional Innovation Technologies) (2001-2003), which provided a platform for regions to exchange experiences and good practice in ICTs for innovation management. He coordinated recently the META-FORESIGHT project (2004-2005), which elaborated solutions to integrate intelligence from foresight, R&D, benchmarking, technology, and market watch. He was expert of the European Commission in the action of support to Science Parks; expert of UNIDO on regional innovation; and actually, he is on the Board of the European Mutual Learning Platform for regional benchmarking, foresight, and R&D.

He has published 10 books and co-edited 3, authored numerous papers, and (co)authored more than 100 research reports. His most recent book is Intelligent Cities: Innovation, knowledge systems and digital spaces, London and New York, Taylor & Francis - Spon Press, 2002.
