Motivation
The prolific advances in multimedia technology together with the rapid commercialization of related services continue generating a constant need for standards to guaranty compatibility across software tools, devices and services. The successful development of multimedia services and applications requires adopting common mechanisms where the needs of different players in the multimedia production and delivery chain are addressed. Multimedia data characteristics, coding functionalities, network protocols performance and user terminals and interfaces are some of the key aspects that need to be carefully examined when proposing new solutions. The resulting applications can only be enabled by new multimedia standards in coding, mobile networking, video streaming, audio conferencing, digital television, semantic multimedia and many others. Multimedia standards are necessary to tackle the potentially adverse effects of technology divergence. They are also crucial enabling tools to drive growth and generate revenue in several industrial sectors including content representation, storage, transmission, interaction, search and retrieval.
Scope:
The aim of this workshop is to bring together key players in diverse standardisation forums to present and discus the most recent developments and trends in multimedia standards including JSVM, Motion JPEG, JPSeach, MMSEM XG in W3C, MPEG-7 and Photo Player MAF. Other initiatives like JPSearch are gaining relevance along with relevant standardisation efforts in semantic based media processing.
Objectives
The main objectives of the event are:
- Provide information about multimedia standards developments
- Provide information about the use for multimedia standards
- Provide a forum for the exchange of experience in using multimedia standards
- Give the workshop participants an opportunity to discuss multimedia standards related issues with key players in standardisation forums
